Looking at the specs, it has the 490r/490t, which are very close to the 57 Classics. So if you like them, you'd love the 57s, and if you hate them, you'll probably hate the 57s. If you want something hotter, throw a 498t in the bridge and it will light that bad boy up. I prefer something warmer, so the set you have would be right up my alley. I never really disliked the 490 in the neck, I just needed something more classic sounding for the bridge. I really dig the 57 classics if those are the pickups meant to reproduce the 57 PAF sound (think 57 gold top tone). I'd post a picture, but can't seem to figure out how to post a picture on these forums. I tried to put a picture from photobucket like I do on the other cesspool of a board but it displays one of those squares with a red X when I do. I could have picked up a standard for 1,200 bucks at the same place, but just can't justify spending that much on a guitar that is basically being banged on in my bedroom. (That craigslist add for the 61 reissue was nice, but that was too much right now too). One day I will purchase the "Jimmy Page" style LP Standard with the Cherry Sunburst finish, but just can't bring myself to drop that kind of cash right now. Especially since my level of talent doesn't justify it. First song I played when I got it home was Shoot to Thrill. Sounds better when played through an SG versus the Tele.

I got my 2006 Les Paul custom for only $2500. actually a bargain compared to new ones. Pretty much mint and I absolutely love that guitar

I'll tell you this -- when you get around to going after that Les Paul, look at the early to mid 90s models. If you like a slimmer neck, get the Classic. If you like a bigger neck, get the Standard. Keep in mind the Classic has ceramic (and very hot) pickups, and the Standard has alnico (and also very hot in the bridge) pickups. In either case, you'll get a better quality guitar than what they're building these days, and you'll get it for $1200 (low end for a Classic) to around $1600-1800 (high end for the Standard).

Thanks for the tips, they are much appreciated. Just ran through my "repertoire" with the SG. The SG feels different than the Telecaster. With the Telecaster I can do a decent job of palm muting and left hand muting strings I don't want to vibrate as I play. Seems harder or just different with the SG. Seem to have some kind of microphonic issue with the pickups too. Hard to explain. I guess the different scale of the SG just takes some getting used to?

Having said all that. It might just be wishful thinking and it being new, but the SG has miles and miles more sustain than my Tele does.

Also, is it insane to feel like I'm being unfaithful to the Telecaster? I've played it more or less every day for the past 5 years, and now I haven't touched it for 2 days because I've been noodling around with the new SG.

Naw, I didn't play any of mine for a couple of months after I got the LP. I pulled the Strat out the other day, but it got neglected for a long time. If you bought it at GC, I'd expect it to need a good setup.

Okay the Gibson SGJ went back and I walked out of there with a PRS SE Custom. We'll see how this one goes. It's the 24 fret job. Made in Korea. So much for my "get a made in USA product".

Were there construction issues with the SG? Like I said, their QC is atrocious nowadays. The PRS SE's are very good, some people replace the pickups and electronics, and some don't, but a near universal complaint is the awful nut. A lot of folks have that replaced.

There was some issue with the electronics on the SG. At least I think there was. Example: I was playing the intro to Funk#49. When I did that full tone bend on the G string and then put the pick back down on the string to make it stop ringing it made a hideous chiming noise. So it would be the full tone bend...horrible chiming noise instead of silence, then pluck the string again with quarter tone bend <ghost bend> then no bend with the 7 5 0 pull off thing on d & g strings.
The SG pickups sounded way too muddy too. I didn't want to start switching pickups and what not because if I'm going to do that I may as well buy a more expensive guitar anyway.
This PRS has a Floyd Rose tremolo. Not sure I'm happy with that either, but other than that so far so good with the PRS.
This PRS also has some type of locking nut thingy. Is that what gets replaced? Do folks replace that with just a standard bone or sinthetic traditional nut?

Oh I didn't know it was the floyd rose one. Have you ever had a floyd rose trem before? They're a pain in the ass to re-string and if you break a string it throws it totally out of whack.
The nut I was talking about is the standard nut, not the locking nut on the floyd rose model. You can only replace the locking nut with another locking nut.
You might have been happier with the regular SE Custom 24, or maybe the SE 245 or Bernie Marsden like I had. With you being a tele-only player that floyd rose is a big adjustment. They're fun, but they're a huge pain in the ass.
