So, some of you seem to have your finger on the pulse more than I do where different flavors of pickups are concerned.
I see 57 classics, and 57 classic +. Can someone provide the pickups for idiots version of what the difference is? If one buys a set of 57 classics is the one that goes in the bridge different than the neck (meaning if you buy a set of 2 do they come predetermined and "part of the deal" that 1 pickup is designed for neck and the other for bridge)? Or do you need to make those choices independent of each. I really dig the way the 57 PAF style pickups sound, but doing a google search to price them is really confusing.
Thanks in advance if anyone can explain this to a bonehead.

I don't know off of the top of my head if you buy a set of 57 classics if one is designated as the bridge and one is the neck. A lot of folks, Jdave included, run the plus in the bridge for a little extra ass. That's an ideal set up in a DLS paul. My 335 has a matched set of 57's and they're wonderful. I can cover any genre of music, save really heavy modern metal, with that guitar.

Having said that, my 57/57+ are nearly identical in DC resistance, and perceived output. My take is the "plus" isn't as "plussed" as it used to be. I'll say this, though -- for a set of good, vintage type PAF pickups, the 57 Classics are really hard to beat. Mine are fantastic. They give plenty of dirt when you need it, and they clean up with a ton of chime and character. I use them at all different positions on the guitar volume and they always deliver. I still use the PRS when I want a more 80's sounding distortion sound, because the bridge in the DGT has an Alnico V pickup with a fair amount more output than the 57+ I have. But if I needed to cover that, the 57+ would do it. I just happen to have a better option available, so I use it when I want that tone.

Thanks folks. JdaveG...Can you provide a link to the exact kind of 57s in which you speak? If they are good enough for you they are certainly good enough for me.

Thanks for the links, and here is where I prove I'm slow. Do each of those links get you 1 single humbucker? It is confusing because the picture seems to show 2 pickups. Do I buy the (plus) by clicking on the bottom link and put that single humbucker in the bridge, and buy the 57 with no plus after it by clicking on the top link and putting that in the neck position? (I think that is the configuration I'm going for here).
Also, your free pickup story is awesome.

They're not cheap, though they certainly aren't the most expensive PAF replica out there either. The + is ideal in the bridge position, and the regular, or non-+, is good in the neck.

That is what I though, but wanted to make sure. Thanks for the clarification. Wondering if high end pickups like this can be expected to come out of the box with any shielding needed to prevent microphonic and other interference issues or if that is something you have to pay extra for (thinking are they already dipped in wax, or otherwise appropriately shielded out of the box).

57 classics are wax potted with even coil windings. Burstbuckers are not wax potted and have uneven windings, so there will be some microphonic squeal. 57 classics are good to go right out of the box, just solder them in (I can't do that, Jdave can) and rock out.
