Devonta Freeman declares he's free of pain from hamstring injury
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- It made perfect sense when Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman was upgraded from limited to full participation on the Friday injury report.
Before practice started Friday, Freeman proclaimed himself pain-free from the hamstring strain he suffered at the beginning of training camp. The injury caused him to miss all four preseason games, leading to rookie Tevin Coleman being named the starting running back for Monday night's season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Earlier in the week, Freeman said he was still taking the injury day by day and wanted to see how healthy he would be come Monday. Late in the preseason, he continued to feel pain while making cuts.
Not anymore.
"I'm good," Freeman said. "I feel great making those cuts. The pain is gone. All the pain is gone. Right now, it's just about getting that rust off. I've been out for like four weeks ago. I'm trying to get all the rust off and get in tip-top shape."
Freeman's treatment has included electrical stimulation therapy and dry needling. He's also put more emphasis on stretching and getting into the training room when he doesn't feel pain.
"All that stuff just to get back healthy," he said. "All type of exercises in the [training] room. I'm doing everything I can do to get back on the field and to compete and be out there to help my team win."
Both Freeman and Coleman believe they can be a "dangerous" tandem running the ball throughout the season. Monday night, they'll have to be solid in pass protection as well against an Eagles team that can swarm from anywhere.
