Redskins still awaiting word on QB Robert Griffin III's injury status
ASHBURN, Va. -- The Washington Redskins are still waiting to receive written confirmation on whether or not Robert Griffin III has been cleared to play.
Griffin underwent more tests by an independent neurologist Tuesday and coach Jay Gruden said Wednesday that he was given the results verbally. However, Gruden wanted to wait until they receive written confirmation from the neurologist before announcing if he's been cleared. Two weeks ago the Redskins announced that Griffin had been cleared, only to be told the opposite the next day.
Griffin suffered concussion-like symptoms in an Aug. 20 preseason game vs. Detroit. He practiced in full the following week until being told that he was not cleared for contact. Since then, Griffin has been limited in practice to individual and group drills. But he has stayed after practice each day, sometimes as much as an hour, to work on his game -- as he was doing Thursday.
Gruden said he did not know why they have not yet received the written results of Griffin's test.
The only question for Griffin, when he is cleared, is whether or not he'll serve as the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback. Gruden said he relay that status after Griffin has been cleared, though he pointed out Thursday that the team doesn't have to announce anything until shortly before kickoff Sunday.
