Eli Manning dodges questions about contract
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Quarterback Eli Manning did not want to talk about his contract negotiations with the New York Giants on Wednesday.
ESPN's Dan Graziano reported Tuesday that Manning and the Giants have had productive discussions in recent days, and could agree to a deal before Sunday's regular-season opener. But a day later, Manning evaded several questions about the topic.
When asked if he would cut off contract negotiations if a deal isn't reached by Sunday, Manning's response was, "I haven’t thought about it."
Manning was willing to talk about the upcoming game against the Dallas Cowboys, and sounded upbeat about the Giants' offense, despite the continued absence of wide receiver Victor Cruz because of a calf injury.
"Good day of practice today. I thought we were pretty good on Monday as well," Manning said. "I feel like we have a lot of weapons, and I feel good about where we are and what we’re trying to do."
He also sounded happy to be going into his second year under offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, rather than his first.
"I feel obviously much different right now than I did last year going into Week 1 -- the comfort level within the offense, the checks and what everybody’s assignments are," Manning said. "I think everybody’s comfort level is high, which makes everybody’s job a little easier."
