Lamar Holmes of Falcons out indefinitely with broken foot
Vaughn McClure, ESPN Staff Writer
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons offensive tackle Lamar Holmes broke his foot during Tuesday's first day of minicamp and is out indefinitely, coach Dan Quinn said.
Holmes ran with the second team at right tackle during the session. He had been with the first team at left tackle during organized team activities since starter Jake Matthews is recovering from January foot surgery.
"Don't know any information in regard to training camp and him coming back," Quinn said Wednesday, noting more should be revealed in the next few days. "Disappointed for him. He's had a terrific offseason. ... Hopefully a speedy recovery."
Holmes, a third-round draft pick in 2012, might be a long shot to make the team regardless of his injury status. Although he lost weight upon returning after the offseason, he doesn't appear to be a good fit in offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's outside-zone blocking scheme that relies on athletic linemen.
Holmes started four games last season before being placed on injured reserve with a toe injury. He started 15 games during the 2013 season.
Veteran Tyler Polumbus lined up with the first team at left tackle Wednesday with Ryan Schraeder at right tackle. Matthews participated in individual drills but is unlikely to be full-go until training camp. Matthews and Schraeder are expected to be the starting tackles for the regular season, so the loss of Holmes affects depth more than anything.
The Falcons are likely to search the waiver wire for help now, or wait until the preseason to see if a capable tackle becomes available.
