Falcons GM assures owner that rookie Vic Beasley will be signed soon
Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff indicated the signing of first-round draft pick Vic Beasley is near.
Dimitroff made as much clear during a question-and-answer session with season ticket holders Thursday night. Beasley is the lone unsigned player in the team's seven-man draft class. When the question was posed about whether Beasley had been signed and what the delay might be, team owner Arthur Blank blurted out, "Good question. I had the same question."
Dimitroff laughed for a second before offering a response directly to his boss.
"He has not been signed yet, but it's very close," Dimitroff said. "And rest assured, Arthur, it'll be done very quickly. And he'll be very happy."
Dimitroff words fell in line with the thought going into the week regarding Beasley's contract situation. It's just a matter of finalizing the language of the deal, such as offsets if Beasley were to be cut during the life of his rookie contract and end up signing elsewhere.
Beasley, the eighth-overall pick in this year's draft, is one of three unsigned players among the top 10 picks along with Tennessee quarterback Marcus Mariota (second), New York Giants offensive lineman Erick Flowers (ninth) and St. Louis running back Todd Gurley (10th).
So how much money is Beasley expected to secure? Well, seventh-overall pick Kevin White of the Chicago Bears signed a four-year deal worth a fully guaranteed $16,563,047 that included a $10,305,852 signing bonus. A fifth-year option is standard in these deals.
The player right above White, Leonard Williams of the New York Jets, signed a four-year deal worth $18,630,868 guaranteed that included a $11,809,720 signing bonus.
Last year, the Falcons signed sixth-overall pick Jake Matthews to a four-year deal worth a fully guaranteed $16,343,500. Matthews received a signing bonus of $10,268,728. And Matthews signed May 21, 13 days after he was drafted.
The Falcons no doubt want to have Beasley signed before the start of their three-day, mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. Beasley was sidelined during organized team activities this week with a shoulder injury.
