Atlanta should know more about Super Bowl 2019 by Wednesday
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank intends to host a Super Bowl in the near future, and word on whether such could occur in 2019 or 2020 will come this week.
The NFL said it will announce Wednesday during the owners meetings in San Francisco which teams will be in the running to host the Super Bowl in '19 and '20. Blank previously made clear his desire to host a Super Bowl at the new $1.5 billion Atlanta Stadium, which is set to open in 2017.
"We've publicly said that we're going to bid for the year 2019, the first year that we can," Blank said last May. "Obstacles that we're going to have to overcome is that there's going to be a lot of competition. It's a very competitive process. Obviously, we think the stadium will speak for itself. And we think the city and downtown will speak for itself."
The NFL would not release the names of the cities expected to be in the mix for the two Super Bowls. The host cities for those games will be announced next May after a vote.
Minneapolis was awarded the 2018 Super Bowl last May after beating out both New Orleans and Indianapolis. The construction of a new $1 billion stadium, set to open in 2016, no doubt helped the city’s cause. Atlanta could benefit from the construction of a new stadium, too.
The last time Atlanta hosted a Super Bowl was January 2000, when Kurt Warner led the St. Louis Rams to a 23-16 win over the Tennessee Titans.
