Joe Philbin acknowledges causing distraction
Earlier this week, Miami Dolphins coach Joe Philbin was non-committal on whether quarterback Ryan Tannehill would start this week against Oakland in London.
As anyone could imagine, that storyline became a big deal instantly.
Tannehill, a former first-round pick, hasn't gotten off to a good start this season. Having a head coach open a door for the media to further scrutinize the position probably wasn't the greatest idea Philbin has ever come up with. Philbin addressed the issue on Thursday to reporters, saying he made a mistake.
“All I’ll say is one of the functions of the head coach is to create an atmosphere free from distractions," Philbin said, via The Miami Herald. "To the degree that I contributed to any of those distractions, intended or not doesn’t really matter. That falls on me. It’s my responsibility and certainly I expect that responsibility as a head coach. That’s all I have to say on that.”
