Osage Nation boycotting FedEx over Washington support
FedEx is a major sponsor of Washington's home stadium. by Jason Butt
Washington plays its home football games at FedEx field in Landover, Md.
The mail carrier has wanted to be associated with one of the longstanding NFL franchises for easy-to-understand business reasons.
But due to this partnership, the Osage Nation in Oklahoma has to decided to direct its ire at FedEx, linking the company to what many believe to be a racist slur used as Washington's nickname. According to a report from the Associated Press, the Osage Nation has called for a boycott of FedEx.
Washington owner Dan Snyder hasn't been willing to listen to Native American tribes that have been calling for a name change. Instead, he's created marketing campaigns to try and prove they shouldn't change the name due to history and tradition.
Due to this, the Osage Nation has the right idea — go after the sponsors. There's nothing scarier to an NFL owner than a sponsor pulling away and becoming unwilling to associate with them. Since Snyder doesn't want to change the name, going after those pumping money into the franchise is one way to force his hands on it. The Osage Nation is also calling for other tribes to boycott FedEx.
In the AP story, a FedEx representative pointed out the partnership was mainly with the stadium and that they host other events. Already, you can see FedEx trying to squirm away from having a direct tie to Washington's NFL team.
