Jeff Fisher would do RG3 trade again
In 2012, the St. Louis Rams held the second overall pick, but had quarterback Sam Bradford and a lot of holes on defense.
So instead of taking what was then a can't-miss prospect in Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III, the Rams traded out, acquiring eight picks over three drafts for Washignton be able to select the former Baylor quarterback.
After a stellar rookie season that ended in an ACL tear, Griffin hasn't been the same. He's struggled and was benched in favor of Colt McCoy last week. With the Rams and Redskins meeting this week, Rams coach Jeff Fisher, on a conference call with the Washington media, was asked if he'd do the same trade again.
“It wasn’t difficult for us,” Fisher said, via The Washington Post. “We looked at our roster and it wasn’t difficult to see that we had a lot of holes. So, it was easy for us to do.”
Among the players the Rams selected as a result were linebacker Alec Ogletree, Janoris Jenkins, Stedman Bailey, Michael Brockers and Greg Robinson. The Rams have gotten some solid talent that could pay off down the road. Of course, the team has had a struggling season, though that doesn't mean that can't change in the coming years as these young players begin to come into their own.
In hindsight, the Rams absolutely made the right call. It's been wild to see Griffin's play decline over the past two years, considering how great he was as a rookie.
