Atlanta Falcons free safety Dwight Lowery had some interesting thoughts about how to get the defense and the team fixed after a third straight defeat this past Sunday.
In a 27-13 loss to the Chicago Bears, the offense never got going due to drops while the defense gave up too many explosive plays.
"Some games come down to this, man, where the defense has to step up," Lowery said. "The offense isn’t clicking the way it should and you have to make up for the slack. It’s a team game, man. It can’t be just offense. It can’t be just defense. It can't all be special teams. We’ve all got to work together. When one area of the ball is not playing well, the other area has to step up -- no matter where it is or who it is. You win and lose as a team.
"Defensively, we can do things better. But it’s still a team. There are still different scenarios that happen, and those scenarios can totally change the outcome of the game. It could change how you play call. There’s just so many different factors. I think a lot of people don’t see and they don’t understand (the factors) that have a great impact on what the game looks like."
Folks do understand that the 2-4 Falcons enter Sunday's game against Baltimore (4-2) ranked second to last in the league in yards allowed (419 ypg.), last in yards allowed per play (6.22 ypp.), and last in passing yards allowed per play (8.33 ypp.).
Do the Falcons have the defensive talent to turn it around?
"Yeah, there's no doubt about it," Lowery said. "Everybody has talent. It's the NFL. There are certain standards that you've got to live to for yourself. One thing, I think, could potentially help is dedication to your craft. What is your craft? What are you doing to get better? Are you going to practice just to practice or are you trying to challenge yourself in practice in order to be a better player on Sundays?
"I don't know. I don't have the answers. I just think you've got to try and consider everything and anything when we're playing so inconsistent in all areas of the team. It's 'What can I do more? What can everybody do more?' It's myself, the offense, the defense, the coaches, everybody. It's all of us. It's not just one side or it's not just the coaches and not just the players. It's all of us."
