Justin Blalock (back) set to practice
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons starting left guard Justin Blalock, who had a string of 102 consecutive games snapped last week due to a back injury, is set to practice Wednesday.
"A lot better,'' Blalock said of his back. "Just a fluke thing. Non-contact. Took a step, and the football gods decided it was time for me to go down.''
Blalock said he knew by last Thursday that he wasn't going to be ready to play.
"Obviously if you don't have a good week of practice building up or a chance of practicing, it's probably going to be tough to play,'' he said. "But obviously I want to be out there helping. I didn't feel like I was in a position where I could be a benefit to the team.''
Blalock sounded optimistic about playing against the Chicago Bears on Sunday but also remained cautious concerning any last-minute setbacks. Harland Gunn stepped into the starting lineup in place of Blalock in a 30-20 loss to the New York Giants and gave up a big sack on a crucial fourth-and-1 play.
Maybe the result would have been different had Blalock been in the game. He was asked if watching the play unfold bothered him.
"Losing bothers me, no matter where I'm at,'' Blalock said. "It's not something that I want to speculate or get into second-guessing people because that's not what I do. We didn't play well enough to win.''
