Smith blames coaches for Alford’s woes
By D. Orlando Ledbetter
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
FLOWERY BRANCH —
Falcons second-year cornerback Robert Alford had four penalties called against him in the New York Giants game.
“We’ve got to make sure that Robert and all of our defensive players understand how the game is going to be called and what is defensive holding and what is illegal contact,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Again, this is a point of emphasis. It’s been going on all through the preseason and has continued through the regular season.”
Smith put the blame on the coaching staff.
“Obviously, we haven’t done a good enough job as a coaching staff and I haven’t done a good enough job in letting Robert Alford know how the game is going to be officiated and what he needs to do,” Smith said.

The headline makes it sound like Smith was throwing other coaches under the bus. To be fair he includes himself in the blame as well. Typical Ledbetter brand of shoddy journalism.

Boy Smitty sure does seem like he's shouldering a fuck ton of blame lately, no more "Process" or "we have to correct" , he's starting to sound like a defeated man

I hate to sound all negative Nancy, but I fear if we don't take care of business in the Dome against Chicago that might really be the end of this regime. It will really suck if we have to endure yet another rebuilding cycle with this team. I'm getting too old for this crap. I really hope they can rally and deliver a successful rest of the season.

I'm at the point that I want them all gone. I'll take my chances with a new regime. I think these guys peaked in 2012 and they just don't have what it takes to turn it arround

We have to rebuild the D (or build it for the first time, which I don't think we ever really did at this point), but the O is there. A new, competent regime can step in and ride the O while improving the D. And properly use the O, not throw bullshit bubble screens the other team sees coming a mile away.
