Panthers CB Josh Norman hopes he doesn't scare Colts from throwing to T.Y. Hilton
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers cornerback Josh Norman plans to dress up as himself for Halloween, which could mean a cowboy hat and boots since he’s an avid equestrian.
He hopes the real Norman doesn’t scare Indianapolis quarterback Andrew Luck into throwing away from him on Monday night, as was the case with Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Philadelphia’s Sam Bradford the past two weeks.
Those two targeted the receiver covered by Norman a combined three times, and you really can’t count two of them since they were screen passes that were thrown behind the line of scrimmage.
If Norman is asked to shadow Colts wide receiver T.Y. Hilton the way he has the top receiver for most teams this season, it’ll be almost impossible for Luck to avoid him.
Hilton has been targeted an average of 10.5 times per game, including 15 last week against New Orleans.
“I don’t see why he wouldn’t come at me,’’ Norman said on Thursday. “T.Y. had like 12 targets a game. I don’t see them taking that away from what they do.’’
Norman wouldn’t admit he’ll be exclusively on Hilton, who ranks sixth in the NFL in receptions with 37 for 606 yards and three touchdowns.
“That’s G-14 classified information right there, boss,’’ he said.
But Norman can’t wait to again have quarterbacks attack him the way they did the first four games of the season, when he had four interceptions, two returned for touchdowns.
As much as he appreciates the respect opponents are showing him, Norman wants to make plays and achieve goals he set before the season.
“I can’t reach my goal without being thrown to,’’ Norman said. “I’m trying to be the best corner. I’m trying to be the defensive player of the year. Shoot, I’m trying to have the most interceptions.
“I’m trying to do it all, even touchdowns to go with that. My goals, stat record, is stupid high.’’
Norman’s play has been key to Carolina’s franchise-best 6-0 start. He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Month for September and began October with the NFC Defensive Player of the Week award.
That’s when teams got smart and began throwing away from him.
But neither Seattle nor Philadelphia has a player of Hilton’s caliber.
“I’m expecting to have a lot of fun with it too,’’ Norman said. “If that is the challenge I’m faced with, hey, I’d like to take that on and see what it looks like.
“That challenge, I accept it.’’
