Broncos will wrestle hype before they get a chance to tackle Packers
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- There was Brandon Marshall during the bye week, trying to have a moment, you know, a leave work at work sort of thing, when his job came back to get right in his face.
"I got away from (football) at first, but as soon as Sunday came, they started talking about all the headlines -- Packers, Broncos, Aaron Rodgers, Peyton Manning -- and then they went back to when we played them in the Super Bowl in the 90s," Marshall said. "I started thinking about all that, so then that got my hype up and got my blood boiling."
And then the Denver Broncos linebacker knew, officially, the team's bye week was over.
The Broncos are 6-0 and the Green Bay Packers are 6-0. Each of those teams has a short-list quarterback and the teams also feature two of the top defenses in the NFL.
So a Sunday night primetime matchup of league heavyweights carries quite the hype quotient. And when the Broncos re-convened Monday morning, following their bye week, they had X's and O's on their collective mind, but they also officially started the process of managing the big-game emotion until it's time for the big-game emotion.
"We have a long week ahead of us," said Gary Kubiak following Monday's practice. "That was my message (Monday) morning. We have to stay grounded. We have a lot of work to do to prepare for them. … We know what we're facing. I don't have any doubt that we'll be ready to play emotionally with the type of game that we're in, but we need to make sure that we keep doing the work to play, too. That's the most important thing."
A lot has been said about the Broncos' 6-0 start, but the one fact that has risen above it all is the Broncos certainly have a better feel for playing in a tight game than the rest of the league's current undefeated clubs. The Broncos' margin of victory is 37 points for six games combined.
Like the Broncos, the Packers, too, had a bye this past Sunday, so both teams should be as healthy as they can be.
"I feel the hype is going to take care of itself because of the setting and the undefeated team, the crowd, everything like that," Marshall said. "You've got to try not to get too amped before the game starts because then if you're too hype when the game starts, you're going to be low on energy. You've got to kind of control your energy, but if you can't get up for this game, then you shouldn't be out there. I promise you this will be that type of atmosphere."
In the end, the Broncos say they hope to get through a quality workweek before playing with emotion and passion on Sunday.
"I know how to calm myself down," said cornerback Aqib Talib. "We have a great coaching staff. They do a good job pacing us, letting us learn one thing at a time and not throwing a whole bunch of stuff at us at one time, making guys panic. We've got a great coaching staff that will keep us calm until it's time to get right."
