Ravens' Timmy Jernigan makes surprise return to Thursday's practice
OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Timmy Jernigan was present at the beginning of Thursday's practice, the first sign that the Baltimore Ravens defensive tackle could play in the season opener at Denver on Sunday.
This was Jernigan's first practice since he injured his right knee in the Ravens' Aug. 29 preseason game against the Washington Redskins. Jernigan is a first-year starter who is replacing Haloti Ngata, who was traded to the Detroit Lions this offseason.
The return of Jernigan is important because the Ravens should have a decided edge up front against a revamped Denver offensive line. The Broncos are starting rookie Ty Sambrailo at left tackle, former practice squad player Matt Paradis at center and recently signed Evan Mathis at left guard.
Whether Jernigan is limited or not will be indicated on the injury report, which comes out following practice.
Five Ravens weren't present at the start of Thursday's practice, which was moved indoors because of rain-soaked fields: wide receiver Breshad Perriman (knee), running back Lorenzo Taliaferro (knee), cornerback Rashaan Melvin (thigh), linebacker Daryl Smith and defensive end Chris Canty. It's possible Smith and Canty are getting veteran days off.
