Panthers' WR Corey 'Philly' Brown wants to be called Marcellous?
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- This whole name thing with Carolina Panthers wide receiver Corey "You can call me Philly" Brown is starting to get out of hand.
Brown began last season as "Philly," the nickname he was given by former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, because there was another Corey Brown on the roster.
He let it be known prior to this season that he wanted to be called by his given name, Corey.
Then he dropped six passes in two preseason games, and coach Ron Rivera on Monday switched it back to "Philly," saying "Philly catches passes. Corey is a nice young man."
Asked what he wanted to be called on Wednesday, the first chance he’s had to react to Rivera’s comment, Brown said, "Marcellous, my middle name."
Asked if Marcellous could catch, Carolina’s starting wide receiver said, "I don’t know. I guess that’s something we have to find out."
Seriously, Brown said it doesn’t matter what people call him as long as he’s playing well. But Brown’s first name officially will be "Philly" on the roster.
"He’s the head dude," Brown said of Rivera and the switch. "He can do whatever he wants to do."
Brown appeared to have endorsed the change when he tweeted "PHILLY!!!" shortly after Rivera’s comments on Monday.
Not quite.
"I was taking a trip to Philly," Brown said. "That was 'Made in America Weekend,' so I went to see a couple of people perform."
He’s right. Beyonce was in the lineup.
"When I tweeted that, that was me just traveling," Brown insisted.
But Brown can’t blame Rivera for calling him "Philly."
"I was dropping the ball in the preseason," he said. "Last year, I didn’t have any issues like this. Him just being realistic, calling it and telling it like it is."
