The Jameis Winston Watch
TAMPA, Fla. – In his first real NFL practice Sunday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston lived up to all of the draft hype.
The first overall pick in the draft completed 18 of 25 passes (unofficially) in 11-on-11 drills. In seven-on-seven drills, he completed 10 of 12 passes.
"I thought he had a good first day," coach Lovie Smith said. "You can't ask for a lot more from a rookie in his first true practice outside."
Smith wasn't counting Saturday night's abbreviated practice at the University of South Florida, part of which took place in a heavy rain. In that workout, Winston didn't look as sharp as he did Sunday.
With the team back at One Buccaneer Place, Winston got all the first-team work. In particular, Winston seemed to have good chemistry with wide receiver Mike Evans.
Even before the practice, Winston drew praise from Buccaneers co-chairman Bryan Glazer.
"Jameis has done everything we've expected him to do," Glazer said. "Everything we thought we were going to get with Jameis is what we've gotten. He's the first one in in the morning, he's working hard, a sponge and working his way to earn the respect of his teammates."
The Bucs never have had a true franchise quarterback. But Glazer thinks Winston can change that.
"One of the things we've seen over our ownership is this is a quarterback-driven league," Glazer said. "So hopefully with the quarterback we can have success for a long period of time."
