Kurt Warner impressed with Colin Kaepernick's progress

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Colin Kaepernick spent six weeks working with two-time league MVP Kurt Warner on his quarterback skills early this offseason.
Warner spent the day at the San Francisco 49ers’ facility on Sunday, taking in his pupil’s practice at Levi’s Stadium and was impressed.
“You’re starting to see him begin to understand playing the quarterback position a little more,” said Warner, in town on official business as an analyst for the NFL Network.
“Talking to guys and the coaches out here, [it’s] the ability to throw with touch, the ability to anticipate things. And some of that comes with Kap, and some comes with the guys around you where you start to trust those guys.”
After a somewhat uneven opening practice Saturday night, in which the hitch at the top of his delivery was evident, Kaepernick looked sharper at the start of Sunday afternoon’s practice.
Still, he was “sacked” and intercepted on the same play Sunday, by Aldon Smith and Tremaine Brock, respectively, in team drills.
Kaepernick also had a pair of third-down passes knocked down, by Tony Jerod-Eddie and Ahmad Brooks.
In each of the past three seasons, Kaepernick has undertaken extensive off-the-field work, in Atlanta two years ago and in Miami last summer. The difference, though, is this time at the EXOS facility in Phoenix, Kaepernick worked on the specifics of the position with Warner and QB guru Dennis Gile, rather than just working on his conditioning.
Kaepernick, though, insisted on Friday he was not actively trying to implement any specific lessons from Arizona.
“No, once you’re on the field, you’re playing,” Kaepernick said. “You’re not worried about anything other than doing your job, to help your team.”
Kaepernick’s total QBR fell from 68.6 in 2013 to 55.9 last season and Warner said he did see some evidence of their work together this spring.
“The little snippets that I’ve seen out here and in talking to people, it seems like some of those [lessons] have been engaged,” Warner said. “But again, it’s all a process.
“He’s trying to build off where he was, which was already a really good quarterback, and become a great quarterback. And that next step is going to be able to make some of those things happen come Sunday afternoon, where you can be a really great athlete but you can also be a really good thrower as well.”
