Julio Jones held out of Wednesday's practice with hamstring injury
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons receiver and NFC Offensive Player of the Week Julio Jones was held out of Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury. The severity of the injury is unknown.
Jones told ESPN.com he received extra treatment after Monday night's 26-24 win against the Philadelphia Eagles as a result of the turf inside the Georgia Dome. Jones said his left arm and legs were a little banged up and had to be patched. He did not immediately reveal the hamstring injury, but the reference to his legs obviously was an indication.
Quinn did not specify whether Jones would return to practice Thursday but said he and Jones kidded about the bumps and bruises during the game. Jones ended up with nine catches for 141 yards and two touchdowns despite taking a few plays off.
Was Jones' injury a concern for the Falcons' coach?
"Naw [it wasn't a concern]," Quinn said. "We were laughing during the game. I'm going with rule two, no excuses. He's a battler. So no. Not at all."
Jones came in and out of the game in the second half and appeared to be a little shaken up. But he gathered himself and exploded down the field for a 44-yard reception down the right sideline that set up the eventual game-deciding, 47-yard field goal for Matt Bryant.
There's a good chance Jones could rest the remainder of the week but the expectation is for him to be ready for Sunday's matchup with the New York Giants. Two of Jones' teammates -- running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman -- suffered hamstring injuries during the first week of training camp and missed significant time. Freeman did not play in any of the four preseason games, while Coleman played in just two.
What happened with Freeman and Coleman doesn't necessarily mean Jones would fall under the same recovery time. Plus the Falcons didn't have to rush Freeman and Coleman back since it was the preseason.
Quinn said outside linebacker O'Brien Schofield also was held out of Wednesday's practice with a groin/hip injury. Jones and Schofield joined receiver/kick returner Devin Hester (turf toe) and outside linebacker Brooks Reed (groin).
Quinn said Schofield will return to practice on Thursday.
Left tackle Jake Matthews (back) and defensive end Adrian Clayborn (thumb) both were limited Wednesday.
Newly signed offensive tackle Jake Long practiced for the first time with his new team Wednesday. Long, who had two ACL tears in his right knee, wore braces on both knees for protection.
