Somehow, Cowboys win as Tony Romo delivers late
ARLINGTON, Texas -- Almost in spite of themselves, the Dallas Cowboys were able to beat the New York Giants on Sunday. Somehow.
On a night in which the Cowboys turned it over three times -- one less than in their season-opening loss to the San Francisco 49ers in 2014 -- and saw those giveaways turn into 17 New York points, Dallas was somehow able to beat the Giants, 27-26.
If you must, call it Tony Romo magic.
With Dez Bryant in the locker room with a foot injury, Romo directed two touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, including the game winner with seven seconds to play on a bullet throw to Jason Witten from 11 yards out to send the AT&T Stadium crowd into delirium and the Giants wondering how the heck they returned home with a loss.
The Cowboys did it all without a timeout in the final 1:29. Lance Dunbar picked up 40 yards on the first two plays of the drive. Then Romo found Witten. His only incomplete pass came on a throw over the middle to Cole Beasley, but Romo followed that up with a sideline throw to Terrance Williams.
On the winning play, Romo was able to scoop up a low snap from Travis Frederick, gather himself and find Witten in traffic at the goal line with the 10-time Pro Bowl tight end reaching over the goal line for the score.
This was a game the Cowboys appeared to have lost many times. They were down 23-13 with 8:01 to play. They were down 26-20 after their defense lost composure with 1:34 to play.
But Romo delivered with his 28th game-winning drive of his career.
Few have been as memorable.
And it's the kind of win that can carry a team for weeks.
